[break][break][break]
The most important insight into the mind of Kalak; he is the most important thing. There are few people that he regards as friends if they do not impart some kind of usefulness to his immediate success. He tosses people and things from his life like an old rag. That is the most important aspect of his personality. To understand that he looks for his own gain before all else is to begin to know Kalak. Very few people would say that he has any entirely pure attributes. There are those that consider him some unconscionable monster that only thrives when he is culling the trash in the way of his personal success.
[break][break]
A layer peels back, and it isn't just a blind ambition that motivates this man. However, there isn't a justification for his behavior. There is only a more intense entrapment of isolationism and a touch of piety. There is an old wound that festers. It eats at the morality of Kalak and as he seeks his own vengeance, he loses sense of his own humanity. He is wrought with anger for the Fruit eater that stole his eye. He projects that hate towards all those he considers to be unclean in an almost religious fervor.
[break][break]
Empathy isn't the only thing that he lacks. It is this blatant narcissism that manifests as an inherent confidence in his own abilities. He never believes that he is second best, and is willing to go to great lengths to prove himself. Right or wrong doesn't matter. Good or malicious, his intentions will be the only plausible response, and he doesn't do well to listen to dissenting opinions. He isn't unable to listen to advice, it is just when his opinion is slighted that he begins to dig in his heels. There aren't too many voices of reason that can break through his stubborn demeanor, and there are few that he will not immediately talk down to.
[break][break]
Beyond all other things, though. Kalak is a fighter. Other aspects of his personality stem from this. It is the deepest, and most internal driving force of his life. He will push when all others are falling back. He will stand when he should be beaten down. Even if it is beyond his limits.

"He's stubborn. He talks too freely. He has no compassion. Yet here I am, wondering if I am looking at the beginnings of something great." [break][break] - Quote by Captain Hildago Marfen of The Desert Eagle from early assessment on Kalak Olafur

[break][break]
The years that lead up to the birth of Kalak were a tumultuous time in the Olafur household. Kaladin's wife, Shallan had given birth to three different children thus far, and two were girls. The third died shortly after birth. Kaladin desired a male heir to carry on his dreams of being an officer in the Marines. When he had been young, he was a Marine himself. Kaladin told grand stories of his exploits on the open sea. He spoke of battles, and fallen pirates. He had the kind of cadence of a man that was to be believed. All of his children would agree that the best part their father were those stories. No one would argue that he wasn't a compelling storyteller. But a stories were all that he had.
[break][break]
The truth was that during his first deployment he got a length of rope rapped around his leg, and it pulled him off deck. After the rest of the crew hauled him back up onto the ship, he had suffered a considerable injury to his right leg. The injury itself would not have been that bad, if he had not developed gangrene due to poor sanitation employed by the ship's doctor. A few weeks passed by, and the infection spread to the point that amputation was required. For a seasoned veteran, it might have been allowable for him to continue serving. However, with him being a fresh (and unadmittedly poor) recruit, they forcibly recommended he take a medical discharge. Shortly thereafter, he went back to his home and wed a young girl that was smitten by the stories that he would weave.
[break][break]
When Kalak was born, he became the life that Kaladin never could have. From a young age he required much of him. He demanded that he study ships, and become proficient with a sword. Kalak never liked his father, but he listened to him. He learned that he had to. When he was finally old enough to join the military, it was almost a reprieve. He found that he took to the open seas quite easily, and it seemed to the young man that this love for seafaring was the only thing that connected him to his father. Although he wrote to his home often, he very rarely made time to go see them.
[break][break]
Kalak would have been a model recruit if he had ever learned to keep his mouth shut. He worked hard, he learned quickly, but he would question his authority whenever he found them to be inconvenient. Despite that, he was obviously gifted in both handling the ship and in combat. That allowed him to gain ranks quite quickly. Eventually he came to be the first lieutenant of a ship called White Panda. During an attack on the ship, he lost his eye and the Captain was killed. He took command of the Panda and gained an intense hatred of both pirates, but specifically devil fruit users.

"He will not be stopped. My legacy will not be squandered. All he needs to reach his potential is to be challenged. So, I will provide the hammer that will craft this unstoppable sword,"[break][break] - Journal of Kaladin Olafur. Father of Kalak during the early years of his childhood.
