[attr="class","op_barb"]It was a peaceful night. Too peaceful to let it just pass through, or at least that was Barbara thought. It was what she was trying to force herself to believe. A strange longing, an unfamiliar sting within, by now she should have completely forgotten what they felt like, but every now and then emptiness would pay her a visit. As much as it got in the way, there weren't much she could do with such stirrings. She was still human, a woman at that and a woman cannot completely be heartless. Her lips twitched slightly at her own thoughts; heart completely agreeing but body forever denying. [break][break]
Closing her eyes, she blew out a cloud of warm air as she tried to expel troublesome thoughts and emotions. It was a feeble attempt. They were still there, getting stronger at each minute that passed. Her shoulders slumped as she acknowledged her defeat. It wasn't like her to lose or give up, but she'd be settling this showdown another time. These weaknesses were allowed to consume her tonight. With her mind made up, mauve optics moved from the dimly lit waters up to the velvet skies. The full moon and a billion- no, perhaps a trillion or more twinkling pinheads reflecting on her eyes. "What a lovely view," She whispered in her mind, yet it wasn't enough to ease the troubled rhythm of her heart. [break][break]
She thought it was strange, though, how she found herself wishing to be filled like the heavens when she was the one who excused herself from the crowd inside the ship. Ah, she could have pulled a gentleman with her but she moved without thinking. All that was in her mind was to get somewhere quiet, her feet following an unconscious command and brought her to the deck. It was empty and painfully silent there; it brought her instant relief but almost immediately gave her a new problem. A bitter smile touched her lips and subtly shook her head as she brought a rock glass half-filled with bourbon to her mouth, taking a sip to wash away the unpleasant flavor building in her tongue. [break][break]
Tonight was going to be long. Although she didn't mind watching the stars alone, she thought it would be nice to have someone to chat with. If it wasn't too much to ask, or if some god was listening; maybe she be given a man who would hold her just this time? The deck was spacious, dimly lit and empty. Truly, a companion would be very much appreciated as the ship sailed the seas to Water 7.

It was tea time in the ship's cabin and all the drinks were spiked. William was at a round table covered in Berri and various items. Across him sat three other tortured souls. They each held a hand of cards close and tried their best to hide their worth. William did the same but looked far more relaxed than his new friends.
In truth, he was high off cabin's air. The room was filled with hearty music, people danced, and every now and then a bar maid came around to fill his glass of spirits. Places like this reminded him of home. It'd been over a decade since he'd come across the Red Line. Some things were different on this side of the world, but every now and then he'd find a pocket of life— like the cabin of this ship— that let him know you could find simple pleasures all over the world.
"Read 'em and weep." A foxy grin dashed across William's face as he lay out his spread— a Royal flush; the highest hand in the game— and by their reaction you would have thought they'd seen a ghost. Eyes popped all over the table and mouths fell agape, and William tipped the bill of his hat to the men they belonged to.
"Now it wouldn't be right of me to support a man's gambling habit," he chided, tongue-in-cheek, and raked his winnings into a sack.
"I'd best be off. Goodnight, gentlemen." William smiled and took his glass, then flicked a single coin onto the table. "Drinks on me. The sting of loss was fresher than ever. Leave it to William to pour salt into a raw wound.
After leaving the cabin William took an aimless walk that brought him to the ship's deck. The night air was crisp and rippling ocean seemed to stretch forever in every direction. The dark water crashed in whispered howls.
Where he came from, the story was those whispers belonged to the Ferryman— the first person to ever launch a boat— who would take seafarers safely to their destination for a price. Many a ship had sailed to ruin for skipping out on the Ferryman's toll, so the rumor goes. William never skipped a payment. Tonight wouldn't be any different.
His boots clicked rhythmically across the wooden deck, from behind the solitary woman he'd most definitely caught sight of. They'd carry past her until he reached the ship's bow, where he fetched a token of his winnings to let fall from the height to be swallowed by the sea. It only took a second, and a second later the howling stopped, but that could've been the whiskey playing tricks on him.
On his way back to the cabin he crossed the woman once more. This time he took a better look at her. He thought she'd been plucked from the scenery itself. Her skin resembled the full moon that beamed overhead and her flowing dress and hair were as dark as the sky and sea. When the wind picked up her features seemed to move in unison with the world around them.
Approach or don't? William considered. She was outside, alone, perhaps for her own reasons. It was a roll of the dice, sure, but William was a gambling man. At the very least it wouldn't hurt to share a courtesy.
The tall blonde man dressed in similar black walked a casual line to the lone woman, and held up his own rock glass.
"Cheers." | |

[attr="class","op_barb"]As if it was on cue, sounds that signaled life filled the air. Barbara's eyes were glued to the moon but ears were perked up, flinching slightly at each time heels and sole collided with the floor. There was no need to look away; her peripheral vision caught sight of a tall figure with golden hair making a stop at the edge of deck. She turned to him, slowly and secretly, watching him under the night's shadow. How stingy! Her thoughts exclaimed to the gods. If they were to give her a man, then at least make it so that he would be close enough. She snorted very lightly, only enough for her to hear before turning her gaze away as the man turned around. [break][break]
Of course, she didn't get her hopes up too high. The party in the cabin was quite grand, after all. Rarely would someone choose a solitary place over fun and games... and rare did this man proved to be. "Cheers," His voice, deep and smooth, resembled the chilled bourbon in her hand. It effortlessly broke her outward display of disinterest as if it was a house of cards, drawing out a pleased smile from her wine red lips. She slightly cocked her head to him, eyes scanning strong features chiseled on his face, before raising her glass to return the toast "Cheers," A sultry greeting slithered its way to the courteous stranger. [break][break]
Barbara's half-torrid gaze never left the man, even when she took a swig from her drink. The rest of her body had yet to completely give in to her longing as they remain facing seas, but perhaps the intensity in eyes was enough to get the message through him? Only time would tell. "It's quite curious," The sound of ice cubes against the thick glass was loud as she moved. Her drink was almost gone; pity as her night seemed to be just starting "To find a soul away from the merriment," She spoke as if she was the one to talk "Perhaps, the cabin pleasures were boring you?" On one hand, she wanted to break the ice; on the other, she really was surprised to find someone plucked out from that crowd. Everyone seemed to be having a blast with all those card games, drinks and pleasantries.

"It's quite curious to find a soul away from the merriment."
"Funny. I was thinkin' the same." William said matter-of-factly and took a sip of his own dry whiskey. It set a flaming trail down his throat that he was used to, and on some level appreciated.
"Perhaps, the cabin pleasures were boring you?" She was wrong. The party in the cabin was very entertaining, but somewhere down there were a group of unsavory types he'd fleeced for all they were worth. For as long as William remembered he'd been alone in the world— surviving on his wits— getting by however he could.
Not much had changed since he'd crossed the Reverse Mountain, but in Paradise his reputation was blister free. He intended to keep it that way for as long as he could. William let his eyes trace the contours of his new friend's face, from one red lip to the other. "The background noise was startin' to get to me. Besides," he lowered his glass and let his gaze meet her own.
"The views better out here." He smiled with his eyes. A brief silence passed before he turned his body to match her own, looking toward the sky.
"How about yourself? Not a fan of parties?" William swirled his glass. Unlike his new friend, he preferred no ice.

[attr="class","op_barb"] Not even a pause for breath slipped unnoticed as she listened to the man rather intently. With nothing else to pour her attention on, this person had it all. She watched his mouth make words and how the wind gently carried gold stray strands away from his face. Seeing him up close, being able to examine him thoroughly, she realized how this man was quite appealing in his own way- dashing, if she had to say. Not bad. "I see," She muttered, shifting her gaze to the skies as well. Though, she would have preferred to have them on his eyes. [break][break]
A question she had anticipated followed shortly. Not a fan of parties? Oh, if he only knew. At this point of her life, parties had become a regular thing in her life, thanks to her late husband's abnormality busy schedule, she was always left alone to entertain herself. "Contrary to that, I am very fond of them," Her lips curled into a small smile, and took a quick glance at the man "But tonight, I thought I like a change of scenario," She shook her glass gently, making the ice ring once more. It was a lie, but did it matter? Casual conversation were rarely important or lasting at that. [break][break]
Barbara let silence consumed them for a moment's time, allowing a gentle gust of wind to pass through. The chilly breeze crawled against her skin, leaving raised hair on its trail. It was a sensation she truly enjoyed "Moreover, it was difficult to find my place in that party given all women inside seem to be clinging onto someone," Although she was the type of person who could fit in any puzzle, it was hard not to feel bitter when everyone around you had an escort. A light chuckle escaped her lips soon after "It's a woman thing," An unsolicited explanation to justify her former statement. She turned to the blond, a playful smile plastered on her face.

William glanced back at the woman every now and then to revisit what drew him to her. Not that she was a woman— that may have been the impetus— but she carried herself unlike anyone he'd seen aboard the ship. Given the sort of people William tended toward she might've been unlike anyone he'd ever met. He thought it strange they hit it off so well, and so quickly. William was a simple man in good terms— a bumpkin outright— and she was sophisticated, at least to him.
What may have just been warm conversation to her, on a cold night like this one, felt especially good. If there was something between them, whether a spark or a fire, he wanted it to last.
"..all women inside seem to be clinging onto someone. It's a woman thing."
"Yet here I am." He quipped and took another drink, a voracious one that emptied his glass. Then he thought back to her initial question and laughed a small plume into the air.
There they were on the deck of the ship intentionally avoiding the cabin, attempting to recreate it's comfort with the fleeting warmth of alcohol. As deranged as that may have been, it made sense that they were on guard while they were alone. Even with how pleasant their conversation had been William still kept up his guard, but he could feel it becoming a chore to do so.
He turned to face her, fully this time, and stood so his body came between her and the blowing wind. "Name's Bill— er.. William."
He smiled and stretched out a hand for her to take, then looked to her empty glass. "How 'bout a refill?"
If she accepted and took his hand he'd lead the way without letting go, guiding her through the dark enclosure that led up to the cabin. The muffled sound of piano songs and party chatter would spill onto them when he opened the door, turning bright and loud to give them a merry welcome. Then he would find seats for two, side by side, and take his own after she found hers.

[attr="class","power-text"] The perk in his voice was quite intriguing, even if it was only for a passing second. Barbara arched a neatly trimmed eyebrow in mild amusement and interest at his jest while low and gentle chuckles slipped through her beam. Their exchange wasn't anything but casual, and if anything they were strangers, yet there was something about his charm that made her feel at ease. She let out a laugh within her mind, her eyes squinting into a smile, at the thought; if that was the case he'd be a dangerous person around, but she would gamble to see more. [break][break]
Turning around he revealed himself, glowing under the moonlight. She wanted to keep her eyes on his face, but wasn't it human's second nature to scan people from head to toe? So she did as quickly as she could, only to find how much of a pleasant image he was with that strong build. He introduced himself with no more than a mention of his name, followed by a smile and an offer she felt rather disheartened to take. With those words, she reckoned they'd be back in the cabin, unless he has a good bottle of whiskey in his room. Even if he didn't though, she would still choose it over the party. [break][break]
"I suppose another glass won't hurt," Barbara didn't keep the charming gentleman waiting and took his gloved hand despite her reservations. But, she wasn't ready to leave yet. She tightened her grip so as to call his attention- an attempt to keep him from moving- as she took steps to close whatever distance that was keeping them a part. "But it intrigues me," A smile touched by both innocence and mischief played on her lips, gaze focused on his hidden eyes "Would you leave me here alone if I said I had too many drinks?" She whispered trying to sound as though she was only curious, but listen harder and one may hear the faint seduction tucked between each word. A firm but gentle squeeze grabbed William's attention, and froze him long enough for her to melt the distance between them. More than a cordial shake, he felt it was an attempt to pull him in— closer to her— and that put him on edge. Still he did not resist but instead gave way to her words.
They pressed against his exposed chest in warm puffs, each one a tacit suggestion toward something more. William hummed a laugh, his mouth stretched into a curve that formed a dimple on his cheek.
It wasn't her question he found humorous, but that they insisted to continue this waltz with one another.
He was convinced she noticed it too. A slow crane raised his chin high and pulled his eyes from out the shadows, to glean the parts of her that weren't hidden by cloth and darkness.
They were mirrors of one another— one charming, the other enchanting— and they reflected only what they saw. Even knowing that he wanted to see more of her.
"Perhaps." William said with an arch grin, and turned his wrist so that her hand sat atop his. She may have felt a new delicacy supplant his strength. The pad of his thumb had taken a slow path to the top of her hand and pressed down gently to preserve their grip.
His eyes took a similar route across the length of her exposed collar and up to her lips. "I mean what decent man would take a woman drunk?" A seconds blink brought his eyes into her own, his gaze ambitious but telling. It betrayed everything he'd said with words, still he told no lies.
"And nameless no less?"
Having realized she was his equal William knew she understood him clearly.
He was not a decent man. Nor she the decent woman she pretended to be.

[attr="class","power-text"] His touch left an aching trail on her skin that made the rest of her body envious and looking for the same sensation. He held her so tenderly as opposed to his strong attributes, it seemed this gentleman knew very well how to hold a woman, accustomed even! Then, his answer came with a heartbreaking twist. What decent man would take a woman drunk? His reason made sense, but the look in his eyes revealed the sweet paradox in him. A single dark chuckle escaped her mouth unintentionally, amusement reaching close to its peak. [break][break]
"Pity," The corners of her eyes lifted just as her mouth curved to mimic his smile, but her mauve orbs never shifting away from those precious pools of cerulean that glinted with what seemed to be the same impulse she'd been trying to suppress. It proved to be a bad idea, as it did nothing but worsen her pangs of desire. The longing and emptiness that she was wallowing in earlier was replaced by carnal greed, or should she say turned into a physical need. [break][break]
With that in mind, she moved to press herself on him with soft breasts against his firm chest. In this place, at this time, there were very little yet so much that she could give him. "But," She gazed at him lovingly and inviting "Maybe I can help you change your mind, William?" She whispered and lowered her eyelashes, exuding a simmering sensuality to add more fire to anything burning inside, or ignite any sleeping desire. It was a hint, an unspoken challenge: stay and she may give more than her name. [break][break]
The impression he was giving her wasn't something that could be put in a frame and hanged somewhere, but who was she to talk? A woman practically draping herself over a stranger was probably not the best sight as well... but neither of them were complaining, at least she wouldn't. From time to time, she needed a someone to match the person she grew into, not the woman her late husband molded her to be. She needed someone who'd look at her when all layers of sophistication were molted off. Pity. Such a quick statement left him eager for more. His ears perked at the pop it made against the night silence and his eyes shifted to her lips for a glancing taste of their color and fullness. If she had any doubt of his own cravings, he'd put it to rest when she stepped forward.
William let go of her hand, his palm smoothing over the bare skin of her arm, so that when she stepped into him it'd rest at the small of her back. He dared the cold to come between them and pulled her closer as a test, to it and to her.
The feel of whiskey hovered over him but it's warmth had grown into something less overt, a feeling he hadn't noticed until he found himself deeply entrenched in it. Orbs of powder blue drew lines along her face, across her moonlit skin and into the supple shadow of her breasts where he remained for a moment.
Change his mind? He smirked and looked at her eyes in search of honesty. She knew his mind had been made up, but was hers? Surely this was a regular thing for her, to blind men with their own desires. Anyone would have been eager to show her off. With her looks alone it would have been a privilege and that raised another question, of which William had many.
Why was she alone? His empty glass fell to the ground with an audible thud to free his hand, aspirant fingers fluttering through the air.
Why was she pretending to be less influential, less powerful, than he knew she was? The hand he kept at the small of her waist ambled delicately onto her exposed back. He selfishly wanted to feel more of her, but there was warmth in his hand that she might have appreciated.
And lastly. What was her name? "Maybe you can..." William paused, purposefully, to leave a blank in his statement that was her's to fill. Charmed, his brow rose.
Or perhaps it was suspicion?

[attr="class","power-text"] What was the whole point of this game? Desire was practically palpable bewteen them, and Barbara could make no mistakes about it. There was something tucked beneath his words that was fairly easy to see. His touches and his gaze, if they could be translated. She'd seen this in so many men, it was impossible not to tell what he had in mind. Yet, a fragile wall of decency seemed to keep them from giving in. It was like testing the waters repeatedly even after it has been proven. Though growing impatient, she was still willing to wait till those optics of his were free from doubt. [break][break] Maybe you can. [break] Like a skilled writer, his statement was a book that had no true conclusions leaving what-ifs lingering in his readers mind. It had its own charm. But before adding her thoughts her free hand slithered up his muscular arm, gliding past its toned form and tracing his broad shoulder and the crook of his neck before settling on his nape with soft fingers brushing against the tip of his golden hair. She lifted the other arm and rested her wrist on his shoulder so that the hand that held the rock glass hanged suspended in the air. No longer did invisible impulses bounded them; they were now entangled in each others' arm as if long-time lovers standing before the moon. [break][break] "...or maybe," A breathy hum left her lips, two words silently deliver as if it was supposed to be a secret. Barbara pressed her fingertips on the flesh of his neck, her nail lightly grazing a patch of skin "All I have to do is to ask kindly?" There was a playful bounce at the end of her statement, a question sealed by a delicate smile meant to suggest modesty. Yet, it was nothing but props to incorporate a different twist in this midnight affair. Her own rock glass soon joined the man's on the floor, liberating slender fingers that quickly found their place on the back of his head. [break][break] With that, Barbara put a bit of a weight on the parts that she was latched on, inviting him to come closer to him. Her gaze drifted from his eyes to his lips, leaving invisible lines on his face. "Either way, I think you'd stay with me," There were no reasons to hold back, at least she had none. [googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] TILL' THINGS ARE brighter i'm the man in black Alright, stranger. William thought to himself. Everything that glitters isn't gold— the age old adage— it was a philosophy he tended toward more often than not. He had his reservations having seen so much in the world, but when the woman pulled him closer, and her fingers traveled north his neck, that romantic proverb seemed more a hindrance than helpful. William let his hand slide further up her bare back to rest his palm on her nape, his fingers splayed and burrowed into her hair to massage her scalp. "...or maybe... all I have to do is to ask kindly?" The thud from her rock glass startled him— she may have felt him tense up a bit— but he refused to look away. And when she pressed her weight into him he gladly held her up, pulling a bit at the play he had on her hair. If this was just a game to her, the board had been set and it was William's move yet again. "Either way, I think you'd stay with me." "Actually," William said in a rumbling whisper that sent tremors from his chest to hers. The words teased at something hidden, something unsavory she may not have liked. Rather than give her time to dissect it, he pulled her closer from where he held. A soft nod set the brim of his hat atop her head and loosened it enough for him to rest his forehead against her own, and while he soothed the parts of her he held William's free hand took a place on her outer thigh. From there it roamed, past her hip and across her lower back where it floated, between that area and topmost portion of her shapely lower half. "I'll be gone before sunrise." William breathed, the soft pad of his bottom lip grazing her own. Then, at last, they pushed firmly, to stay and button any other idling he or she may have had in mind. First came relief, then vigor. William wanted her to feel both in every cupping kiss he gave. SWANSKI

[attr="class","power-text"] Exhalirating vibrations that accompanied his deep and dark vocals stole her mind from everything. A subtle sensation that she truly enjoyed-- it's the little things, after all. However, Barbara was certain that he said something that would have tasted bitter, probably just another thought that wasn't worth pondering on. Was there anything she needed, wanted or had to hear? Nothing else mattered. Not even his choices. They were already at the point where 'no' was no longer an answer she'd accept, and she'd do everything in her power to keep him from treading near such thought. [break][break]
The scent of whiskey grew stronger as he drew her in; heart skipping a beat at the tug. The flickering passion in her eyes was set into a steady blaze, but she found herself closing them at the motion of his hand traversing a zone that every girl would aggressively protect. She painted pleasure on her face to let him know that she approved, and she was wanting more of his touch and warmth. Tonight she'd play the part of the damsel in distress who fell in love with the wrong hero. [break][break]
Words that poured out his mouth surely wasn't something one would want to hear. It didn't matter though. Again, nothing else did more so when their lips finally connected. Barbara clung onto him harder, pulling herself in to deepen the kiss. She tasted the whiskey that lingered in his mouth: it tasted good, or perhaps it was the kiss? It started mildly but was immediately followed by strong flavors... feelings that he kept within. Outside the walls of the ship, surrounded by cool waters and the evening breeze-- it was chilly but her body was becoming hotter.
