In the middle of the South Blue sits a little island. On that island are a very few number of things but namely a volcano, a forest, a beach, a number of animals, and many, many caves. On this island in the middle of the South Blue with its volcano and forest and beach and animals and caves also resides a small little tribe. And it is from this small little tribe that a small little girl was given the name of her mother's father's mother - Kitai.[break][break]
Now you must understand that Kitai was a weak little girl, born under a silvery-white moon with silvery-white hair. Her hair, you see, was a curse on her people. A sign from their gods. It was bad luck; a warning that hard times were coming for them, because when a girl was born with silvery-white hair under a silvery-white moon, disaster was on its way. (On the reverse, when a male child was born under the same conditions, it meant that great fortune would come - but that's better left for another time.)[break][break]
Her people did not hate the child for it; it was not the child's fault; in fact, they praised that their gods had given them the gift of warning. It better prepared their chief - Kitai's father - for misfortune. A great plague or hurricane, perhaps? These were the misfortunes that typically followed the birth of a girl like Kitai under Kitai's moon (Kitai's moon is the moon that passes full on May the 13th, for those of you whom do not know the tribe's history and astrology). The buildings of the tribe, the chief and elders were should, would remain no matter the thing that bumped them. The walls of both their summer and winter homes were said to have been built by the gods and goddesses themselves and would fall to no man or beast. They had best it all - hurricane, tsunami, an over-population of chickens; and still those tall wood beams stood through it.[break][break]
They would stand through whatever it was that Kitai foretold.[break][break]
And while we tuck that story to bed, we can look at Kitai over her young years. The tribe. The island. For you or me, the island was nothing but a scratch on the surface of the South Blue; nothing of note to the outside world as it passed around them. No special animal or object of interest to even the islanders. Without great influence from an outside world, tradition had a strong foothold: gods and goddesses went unchallenged as their beliefs, a balance between the tribesmen and the island remained, and no one thing was greater than another. Very few ever left the island because very few ever returned. The islanders lived in their own little primitive world.[break][break]
And in their little primitive world, Kitai grew strong with the others her age. Respect, honor, protection, and care and concern for all - these were the principles that all were expected to show. Very few rose above the others through their traditions, though all were equally able to achieve this higher standard but not expected to. Tattoos were a sign of strength and cunning; long hair was a symbol of respectful behavior (having one's hair cut meant that they had offended the tribe); a stork crossing your path was seen as a blessing; stepping on a mouse meant terribly bad luck. There was no favoritism since each person was expected to do their duties - the only tribesmen who had different duties from the norm were the chieftain and the elders. Any able-bodied person was expected to hunt and care for their brethren. The most serious crimes were met with being the tribesman being cast off the island either by volcano or sea. Up unto this time it can be counted on three fingers how many of the tribesman were cast off the island; none of whom was known to have survived.[break][break]
Kitai herself did not earn a tattoo until much later in life. She never had her pretty white hair cut. She was respectful of her family and rarely got into any kind of trouble, except for one teenie little incident with a bear that chased her back to their summer cave once and clawed a few of her brothers and sisters before it could be taken down. (You must have noticed by now that Kitai only seems to have brothers and sisters - this is a tradition of their tribe; if someone was not your mother/father/wife/husband, then they were your brother/sister - strange to you or me perhaps, but it's a knack that will remain with Kitai forever).[break][break]
As Kitai turned to her 21st year, the weather brought a very dark night with a very red blue moon. The tribe was sure something would happen, but nothing came for them. The first few times Kitai's moon sailed across the sky, they were wary. But this next time they were at ease. There were no extra guards or watchers. Some had begun to believe that the gods had made a mistake or perhaps changed the event in their favor.[break][break]
How unfortunately wrong they were.[break][break]
The following morn, invaders attacked from the beaches. A small army in a large ship clad in red and blue. Each held a boom-stick (we would know these as pistols) - some weapon that the tribe was unfamiliar with. Kitai had been hunting at the time; the loud booms from boulder-tossers (cannons, to our understanding) brought her running back to find her home in ruins. In a stroke of luck, some of the tribespeople had managed to get the children and elders to a safe location before the invaders stormed the beach, to which Kitai joined her brothers and sisters. The battle lasted all day; Kitai's tribe had lost more than the invaders had, but when Kitai challenged and killed their chief - their 'captain', as they so called him - and one of her brothers took down their chief's second hand - or 'first mate' - the battle was over.[break][break]
The term 'You keep what you kill' came into play. And so, Kitai gained a pirate crew on that day. Since their chief had fallen as well, and Kitai now controlled the pirates, each side peacefully buried and removed their own while Kitai consulted with the elders. By the end of many conversations and much waiting, it was decided that Kitai would take her pirates to another land, far away from her tribe and home. It was also decided that in doing so, Kitai would gain a tattoo (See? She got a tattoo!) for doing so. And so, Kitai was prized with a grand tattoo of a team of manta rays. (Manta rays were seen as great protectors, you see).[break][break]
Now, you may be thinking of a Romantic scene of our heroine drifting off into the sea with her own pirate crew, off to travel and discover new lands. It would be naive of you to believe this. If you wish to keep on believing this is the end of our story, then I warn you to stop reading here. For you see, our heroine did not drift peacefully with a loyal crew into the seas. In fact, many of those in the crew thought they might be able to best her, but her senses and discipline from the tribe made her wary of these attacks, and never once was she bested.[break][break]
She commanded the ship for days, doing what she could to keep the crew busy with the limited knowledge she had of ships and commandeering them. She feared that they might try to leave her or attack another tribe or village had she let them dock or stop once more, so they avoided any islands or other ships under any circumstance. It wasn't until their ship had come across a Marine ship that Kitai had come in contact. She didn't know who the Marines were, but they seemed different from the pirates she was temporarily commanding. The ship was taken under control even with the retaliation from the pirates. They fought for their freedom - Kitai did not. She did not want to command them any more, and these 'Marines' seemed to know more about what to do with the pirates than Kitai. She, of course, was taken into custody as well for a short time until it was completely understood that she was definitely not one of them. It was an unbelievable story - how a pirate crew attacked an unknown tribe on an unknown island, but enough of the crew spoke against her being their captain that the Marines had no reason to not believe it.[break][break]
And now that she was free, where was this little white-haired girl to go? Twenty-one of age and raised in a society so buried in traditions and regulations. She'd no idea how to get back to her home, so she bore a new plan. Maybe she would try to spread the good she believed came from her tribe. She wanted to go home, but something about this new world and the Marines made her heart beat in her head. She wanted to stay in this different world; help it.[break][break]
