[nospaces] EVEN AN ELEPHANT NEEDS IVORY WHAM! WHAM! WHAM![break][break] Heavy blows echoed over the docks of Mocktown through the early morning. The sound sent birds flying into the open sea air and drunkards stumbling into a dark quiet hole to avoid the noise. Thomas stood sweating on the bow of a shit* he did not own, both hands gripped tightly around the grip of his trusty hammer. He was fitting a new figure head onto the bow of the ship some pirate had brought into port the previous night. The Elephant man had been lucky enough to befriend the captain of the vessel over a few strong drinks the night before. Once the man was nice and lubricated it took little effort for Tom to convince him to employ his services. An early morning of work after a late night of heavy drinking was nothing to him. Business as usual as far as he was concerned. The seas were unforgiving and there was little room to let one recover after a night of merry making. [break][break] WHAM! WHAM! WHAM![break][break] The final blow against newly placed figurehead brought the final wedge of wood in tight to the railing of the bow leaving a smooth practiced finish. Placing his hammer head first on the deck Thomas heaved his chest with a large sigh before blowing it out and wiping the sweat that had accumulated on his pierced brow. Another job well done, nothing fancy, rather bland if you asked him but it was exactly what the customer had ordered. The pirate grabbed his hammer and heaved it over his shoulder as he jumped from the port side of the ship to land heavily on the wooden dock bellow. [break][break] "Tell your friends. I might be around here next time they come to port if I ain't found work by then." Tom towered over to the captain of the ship. A stout man, well rounded from years of inactivity and gorging himself, handed him a small sack that clinked as Tom wrapped his hands around it. "Next time I recommend slowing down or turning when you come at another ship. Just a suggestion. If not I'll charge you a pretty penny and we'll get you set up with a ram on her." A thunderous laugh erupted from his chest as he slapped the man on his shoulder knocking him severely off kilter. [break][break] The smile quickly vanished from his face after he passed the man, pulling open the sack as he went. There was a part of Thomas that regretted leaving the pirate crew he had fallen in with in his youth. Work was getting hard and money was scarce. There had been a few times he had considered going after a few lower level bounties out there. But truth was Navigation was far from his strong suit and with a overwhelming capacity for drowning wandering at see seemed like a bad idea. Maybe he could get a good deal with a circus if he found the right crowd. [break][break] Tom chuckled at his own joke as he returned to his belongings he had left on the docks and gathered them together. Despite the early hour the man grabbed a bottle of rum he had left sitting atop the bag, taking a heavy swig as he walked back into the town. Of course ones coordination tends to be hindered by walking when one drinks. Not realizing where he was going the mountain of a man walked clear into an innocent passerby. The bottle tumbled from his hand and shattered on the ground below on impact. [break][break] "Well shit. So much for hair of the dog, eh mate?" Thomas spoke turning to face whoever he had run into. He stumbled out of the ship with the nastiest headache he could possible have. He felt as if a massive giant was crashing against the ship with emphasis. However, having not really payed for his fare, he couldn't be choosy. With some of the shipmates of the vessel watching over, Coyote knew he couldn't make his move until morn. Here it was, just a little after dusk and he was ready to sprint as soon as the hatched opened."WHAATTT!", Coyote could only laugh inwardly as he dashed past the captain. He'd managed to zig and zag through his other accompanying men until he was home free. He didn't really have a reason as to why he chose them, all he knew was that he needed a way off of his home island. With most of the Siver's gone away to go after their life's catch, Coyote felt as if he was called as well. He was after the journey of finding the best he possibly could. He'd return back home as a master angler and make everyone proud. He even daydreamed as he ran about the feeling of accomplishment he knew he could reach. He slid underneath the legs of one final crew member trying to stop him. He loved the rush of freedom. The air in his lungs felt different. The smell of saltwater was more defined for him. He felt alive as he reached back to his feet. The pirates decided to not pay the boy anymore thought. After all in the long journey to reach port, Silver never ate, stole, or used anything that wasn't his. He turned his spirit inward and visualized the big catch the entire voyage. A technique taught to him by his Uncle, also a Master Angler back in the village.Coyote would give the disheveled pirates a small wave. He had to thank them after all, with no ship or money of his own, Coyote had to rely upon them for safety and passage. Overall while the unit diid have their flaws, he could tell that they were capable and a nice crew. Coyote turned to start the next chapter in his life-SLIP- Unfortunately, it began with the soles of feet hitting the fresh liquid hitting the ground in front of him. Luckily he was able to avoid any shards of glass. "AHHHHH", he lunged to the side to roll on his shoulder. No matter what he couldn't risk breaking Ebisu. It was the tool that would see him reach his dreams... Plus he couldn't get another rod without any coin. Coyote hit his shoulder firmly against the ground. However, he used his body to steady himself and find his legs brace against the ground with. "Hey! watch where you're spilling ya big bum!". Coyote slowly rose up to his feet as his eyes narrowed slightly against the culprit... A big guy with.. what was possibly the biggest hammer he'd ever seen in his life. Coyote's jaw dropped slightly, as he halfway hoped the man wouldn't take offense.

[nospaces] EVEN AN ELEPHANT NEEDS IVORY [break][break] It took the large man a few moments to process what exactly had just unfolded before him. The boy seemed to come from nowhere, in a full out sprint from the direction Thomas had came. Unfortunately for the little guy it seemed that Tom's spilled drink had turned into somewhat of an oil slick putting a halt on the young man's escape. Being tall enough to look over the crowd Tom gazed back to see the crew of the ship he had just repaired running among in the crowd seemingly looking for somebody. [break][break] "Stowaway! Thomas barely heard over the hustle and bustle of the street. He turned his eyes back to the little man when his unlikely victim spat an insult at him before taking a long look at Thomas. Throwing his head back Thomas let out a thunderous laugh, honestly amused by the sudden words. Tears welled in his eyes as the captain and several large men muscled their way past the crowd behind him to spot the boy. "There he is! Get him!" The captain cried out loud before moving to lunge his plump body forward. He was stopped short as Tom's massive hand caught the man by the collar and hoisted him into the air leaving his scuffed fancy shoes dangling in the air. The Captains face turned a shade of bright purple as he turned to see who had stopped his advance. "Unhand me you great brute! That boys a stowaway! I'll have him flogged!" He struggled more as his two crew members watched on eyeing Thomas nervously. Tom looked to the boy, to the man and back again before tossing the wide man back towards his men and swiveling to stand firmly in front of the boy. [break][break] "You're wrong." Toms thick voice boomed as he heaved his hammer in front of him and let it fall heavy on its head, the weight keeping it standing all its own. "Boy's with me. Must have gone exploring while I was working. Go about your day." His heavily pierced brow curled into a glare as the man seemed about to protest. Of course anyone with two brain cells could figure out he was lying. It was whether or not it was worth contesting it. The air seemed to go still for a moment before Tom reached out and tapped the end of his hammer's handle for effect. "Unless you want to say otherwise. I didn't get that much of a work out this morning." His lip curled into a devilish grin that dared them to try. It was only a moment before they started to retreat back into the crowd. The wicked look vanished from Thomas' face along with them and he heaved a deep breath and turned back to the kid. [break][break] "Point of advice kid. Wait til they're all drunk and sleeping, you have a better chance of getting away." Another smile came across his face but this one turned his naturally intimidating face into an inviting one. He held out a massive hand in peace to the stowaway. "Sorry I messed up your escape slugger. Let me buy you breakfast to make it up?" RINGLEY BARNUM [/quote]

What happened next came so quickly for Coyote. One second he was nearly shaking at the knees hoping the big man would use his massive hammer to squash him flat, and the next second the man was going to bat for his sake. Coyote could only try to hide his amused smile with his forearm. He tried his best not to laugh as the big guy lifted his would be assailant clean off of his feet, the lie he told them as well was just as amusing for Silver. In the end, peace and common sense prevailed as Silver watched the pirates trudge off, heading back to their vessel. Coyote was left alone with his temporary guardian angel, and quickly found his extended hand. "I coulda taken 'em." Coyote said, not really sure if he could or not. However, one thing he learned fast growing up around other Silver's, was that you never showed an ounce of weakness or frailty to anyone. When things hurt the most, he was instilled to bear it all with a fearless smile on his face.
Coyote's next move was to find the man's hand with his own smaller one. The two shook, and the large guy spoke something about buying him a bit of breakfast. rAs if his stomach worked on cue, it began to rumble loudly. After all it was a long journey being on their ship. Deciding to not take what wasn't his was good for his own psyche, but in the end hunger was starting to prevail over everything. "Breakfast? Well I can't say no to that haha!" He gave the man a big smile as he retreated his hand back to his side. Coyote's eyes began to scan around his surroundings. He was looking for any clue or signage to indicate where the big blue had taken him too. It was only mere seconds before his eyes scrolled across a sign for one of the Mock Town General Stores. It was an odd enough name for a place, but he was still very much excited for the change of scenery. Beck home he knew every twist and turn of his resort island. There was never anything new, even the fish stopped producing new catches for Coyote to gush over. This was one of the bigger catalyst to why he'd taken to the high seas. He was in search of something much bigger, something worthy of catching.
As he smiled thinking about the delicious food that was to come, he then began to ponder over how he was going to pay the large guy back. He'd have two favors to owe to the man, and that was an account he was intent on settling. He hated to owe anyone anything, just like the other Silver's he always paid off his debts. "I uhhh, I can't really give you anything for helping me... But if you want to eat for the next week without paying a thing, then I can get something out of the sea for you." He offered the man his skill as an angler. There was always a bevy of bounty in the ocean just waiting to be fished out. He hoped it would be sufficient enough for the man to use as compensation for his assistance. However, if it wan't then Coyote was ready to do anything to be square and even with the man. "My name is Coyote Silver!", he said with pride in his voice. It was always nice to introduce yourself, that way he couldn't call the man a stranger anymore. Instead he'd be a good acquaintance, and hopefully the first friend he'd make on his quest for honor and glory.

[nospaces] EVEN AN ELEPHANT NEEDS IVORY [break][break] Thomas like the cut of this kids jib. Even against uncertain odds he kept an air of certainty as to his ability to defend himself. It was brave, maybe a little stupid, but Thomas knew it well because it was the same way he liked to face such danger. One never knew when a false front and a poker face could take you all the further you needed to go. Tom joined into the boys light laughter with his own booming one as the kid seemed excited at the concept of being treated to breakfast. It seemed pretty self explanatory that if the boy had to stow away to get passage on a ship then chances were he didn't have money for grub. Tom's own stomach gave a loud growl in protest to his prioritizing work to eating. [break][break] "I'm a Pirate there slugger. If I wanted anythin' from ya I'd have taken it when I let them cart you off." He threw a wink to the young stowaway to show his jest. Turning to grab the hammer still standing beside him he effortlessly hoisted it into the air above him and allowed it to rest on his shoulder as his hand lay limp on the handle to maintain balance. "Sure as hell don't have anywhere to store any fish. Suppose i could probably smoke a few of them and keep them in my pack for a travelling snack. My obliged little man." Tom tipped an invisible had his new friends way. When the boy introduced himself Tom's grin only widened more. The pride in Coyote's voice as he spoke of his name, as if declaring a proud achievement to a crowd. Familial pride was one thing that the Elephant man knew all too well. A part of him ached at knowing he was the only of his line but that wasn't to say he would be the last. [break][break] "Coyote, I'm Thomas Ogle, third of my name. You and I are gonna get along just fine." He clapped his hand on the boys shoulder before beckoning him to follow down the road as he began to walk along the path. It would carry them away from the docks and around the beach further to where the majority of the town was tucked away in the heavily wooded resort island. It was a short walk to the vendor Thomas had in mind. Though he watched the road occasionally he mostly was trying to figure out the young lad. There was a part of him that was reminded of himself at a young age, that love for adventure and the sea but not two berri to rub together, [break][break] "If we ain't to full after grub I'll still take you up on that fish. Shoot maybe you can teach me a thing or two. Heard a saying once. If you teach a man to fish or something, couldn't tell ya. I'm too broke to pay attention" His thunderous laugh filled the air again as the unlikely pair continued down the road. [/quote]

Coyote had never been this up-close and persona with a pirate before. From what he knew back home, Pirates were the flea-bitten dogs of the seas. However, Thomas Ogle seemed to be the nice and generous sort. He wondered what other misconceptions people back home would have about other things and people in life. The island was far cut from any major hubs of bustling population. So it was clear to see this opinion was just based on a lack of experience and interaction. "It's fun really! Where I come from everyone fishes.", everyone also eventually left in search of greater catches, Coyote withheld this part to his new friend, not wanting.to bear the man drown with his humble and boring reasons for adventure. Instead he merely retried Ebisu from his makeshift back holster. He gave his favorite fishing rod a few twirls, loving the sound of his short wire swishing and cutting through the air.
Two two continued their walk, with Coyote observing the huge wall of a man. He wondered if it required brute strength such as Ogle's in order to survive this rough searing life. He knew one thing for certain, he at least needed a vessel. He turned towards the man, walking in step-but going backwards as he'd face his new friend. "Hey was that you hammering against the ship?", he asked with genuine curiosity. He'd never felt any power like that before. The man was literally a one man ship repairing crew. While Coyote knew one could be excellent at anything they put their mind to doing, he'd never even though of one person having all the power by themselves to alter an entire vessel. "Because that was amazing! It gave me a headache, but still! I've never met anyone that strong before.", Coyote would give the guy an honest smile as they ventured deeper into Mock Town.
The town would easily snatch up Coyote's attention as he could only take in so much of it all. He'd never seen so many people in one place before. There was so much to do, so much to see, and the best part was that being bight an early he had time to do so much. Overall, he needed to find himself another ship to sneak away too, one that would be getting him closer to Belly Island. He had a date with destiny with the Azure Sharptooth, and he wasn't going to put himself of schedule. A bounty like that he was sure the others who would want themselves to be seen as master anglers would already be on the move in search of collecting that bounty first.

[nospaces] EVEN AN ELEPHANT NEEDS IVORY [break][break] Truth was despite his rough exterior Tom had a soft heart. Especially one for young kids who knew how to find a spot of trouble. He had been one himself one day. That was why a portion of the reason that Thomas had trouble with coming across a good crew that stuck with him. As far as he was concerned there was honor among thieves but from what he kept coming across in the world it seemed like he was mostly alone. It was the same reason he left his old crew after they let loose on a town of innocent people with no loot to be had. Same reason they hunted him down and destroyed the only other remains of the legacy he held so dear. Tom didn't notice that he had fallen unaware of his companion at the darker thoughts that had crept their way back to his head. Coyote bringing up the hammering of the boat brought him back to earth. [break][break] "Well where I come from little Pup everyone swings large hammers." He threw a wink at Coyote as a slight grin crossed his face. "I come from a family of shipwrights. We were renown across the west blue for the beautiful craftsmanship of our boats. Swinging that kind of equipment builds up on a man's muscle, ancient family techniques passed down through generations. You won't find another shipwright using a hammer like this Pup." He tapped the handle of great hammer lovingly, as he spoke his voice was filled with pride in his legacy. Tom was always happy to boast his families story, the more people who's ears it touched meant the longer their tale stayed alive in case he ever took a spill into the great blue sea. [break][break] "Besides I have a few tricks up my sleeve." Tom nudged Coyote gently with the corner of his hand, not giving him too much of a push. They were entering into the town now. A peaceful little hamlet from the looks of it but the untrained eye could easily miss that the town was filled to the brim with names in piracy. All the more reason he felt a small boy need not go unattended. Less he get roped in to a crew much like what happened to him. There was a small vendor tucked between two trees and busted wooden tables placed off to the side. There was a variety of meats and grains. Most simple things that a man of the sea came to take a liking too. After six months out to sea one tended to care less on flavor and more on keeping their stomachs full. Thomas grabbed a large leg of ham and a massive hand full of various fruits. He waited for Coyote to pick whatever he wanted then paid the man and ushered the young man to the further table in the shade. [break][break] "So tell my Coyote. Why does a young boy stow away on a ship to come to an armpit like Mock Town?" Opening his mouth Tom tore off a massive chunk of ham and ground it away between his teeth. [/quote]

"Well...", he began. There wasn't much too it to be honest. He didn't use the first thing that came to his mind. Instead, he mulled over it as he sunk his teeth into a juicy red apple. He thought over why he was here. On the surface he was just trying to inch closer to Garillo Island. It was there that sat Belly Lake, the home of his prey the Azure Sharptooth. However, thinking beyond that he truly knew that he just had to find any way to leave his home island. He loved his stomping yard of course. He knew all the best fishing spots in the entire community, well everyone did. However, as much as he revered and loved his home, he knew that he was approaching the call of more. The same call that saw his other family members take leave of their home. He was ins search of adventure, in search of friends, foes, triumphs, and even defeats along the way. He'd left to find a new fresh breath of life to fill his lungs.
"I didn't have any berri to get a fare from my home... I'm actually on a job kinda.", he muted away at his apple as he looked up at the man. He felt his jaw starting to drop again with the sheer magnitude of the man's appetite. He was tearing right through a hunk of meat that probably outweighed Coyote himself. The young boy could only chuckle to himself. "Oh wait actually.", he dug into his pocket with his free hand. After fishing his fingers through some buttons and other loose items within its confines, he eventually retrieved a folded piece.of paper. It was the bounty poster he'd seen describing the task and reward for capturing the Azure Sharptooth. He'd unfold the paper and hold it up for Thomas to observe for his own self. The man would undoubtedly see the scowling mug of a blue female fishman, all tied up with a murderous look in her eyes. However, Coyote had never seen a fishman in his life. In fact he considered the Azure Sharptooth to just be some really odd looking fish that had the power to maul unsuspecting swimmers and lake-goers.
"This is the Azure Sharptooth! I found this from one of the sailors passing by my home. They say its a really scary fish that's been snatching up and drowning people in Garillo Island!", he spoke excitedly as he used the sleeve of his jacket to clean off his mouth. He couldn't wait for the moment he would stand face-to-face against the beast. The best part of that little daydream would be the look of surprise on the beast's face when Coyote's hook was locked onto it. He'd pickle the Sharptooth no matter what, and he'd show everyone how great the Silver's were at the craft of angling. "I'm going to be the one to catch it!", he laughed with a feeling of confidence brimming in his voice. He figured the hardest part would be getting to Garillo Island. However, if he could make it here to Mock Town, he knew that he'd eventually arrive upon his destination. His only fear, was that someone would beat him to the task. He knew time was of the essence. Still, he wasn't going to break his neck rushing to leave Mock Town. He didn't have long to be here, so he was going to take in as much of it as he could.

[nospaces] EVEN AN ELEPHANT NEEDS IVORY [break][break] Tom's chewing came to a halt as Coyote said he was on a job. It was surprising coming from a boy who must be so young. He kept surprising him on that front. It would be all to easy to forget that it wasn't a full grown man sitting in front of him. Though he wished he was after being shown the folded piece of paper. What was on it wasn't a fish but a fishman, most likely an ornery one based on the bounty that was on it's head. He didn't know if he had the heart to break the news to the kid that his prized fish was more likely to be a cold blooded murderer. To yank the rug out from someone who had already come so far would be heartbreaking. [break][break] "Well she definitely looks like a handful Coyote, just gotta make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew pup." Tom reached to the small pile of fruit he had amassed and took a big bite out of an orange, skin and all. A few moments of chewing and he swallowed the mouthful wiped the juice that glistened on his chin and soaked part of his shirt. [break][break] "Can you fight kid? Like..." Tom looked around him trying to figure out how to ask the kid if he could handle himself without insulting him. It wasn't unheard of to assume that a kid wasn't exactly combat ready but these weren't exactly the best surrounding for a kid to find himself in. "Say I didn't mess up your great escape from that boat back there. Thugs catch up with you. What do you do?" His eyes studied Coyote's reaction behind a heavily pierced brow, sizing his response. He couldn't just let a kid who couldn't handle himself off to hunt a fishman on his own but he wouldn't crush a boys dream for nothing. [break][break][break] RINGLEY BARNUM [/quote]

"Oh that's easy...", he said with a big smile on his face. He quickly finished his apple, throwing the core of it aside into a nearby trash bin. When it came to fighting, Coyote didn't know too much. He was an angler, but even still there were certain tricks he had under his sleeve to protect himself. His time and dedication to his craft head netted the boy a tremendous ability to produce hidden strength that one wouldn't assume he'd have simply because of his age, his size, and his stature. "Well I'd have beaten up his crew." He said cheerily as his eyes marveled at another apple. He took it upon himself to bite into the fruit as he pondered why the big guy was asking him such a question. Was there something about the fish that had his new friend concerned? Coyote did notice that the man's tone and facial expression changed slightly when he showed him the picture of the fish and the bounty.
"I'm actually really strong! I do a lot of push ups every day and sit ups too!", he was referring to his own personal training regimen. Even as a stowaway he made sure to keep his body working at its very best. He was a growing young man, and one thing he learned from the other SIlver's around him, was to always maintain a strength of body, mind, and spirit. It was some of the key essentials for being great at fishing. However, it also had its positive uses in other aspects of life. While Coyote had never been in a fight for his life before, he wouldn't ever shy away if things ever became that dire.
Then again in his mind this was simply a fish he was after, and you never fought a fish knuckle-to-knuckle. The absurd though of him doing battle with the floppy, scaly thing made him laugh slightly as he continued to indulge in his healthy balanced breakfast.

[nospaces] EVEN AN ELEPHANT NEEDS IVORY [break][break] Coyote didn't seem to be to phased by the concept of fighting. Rather than easing Tom's mind it simply worried him a bit more. The small boy was confident but confidence was a double edged sword it was all too easy to be cut by. But there was no way he didn't know what fishmen were right? He couldn't have come this far without at least having a slight idea of what he was up against. Fishmen were becoming all to common along the Grand Line. Of course this young boy didn't seem to world weary so it was hard to tell. [break][break] "Trust me Pup, I believe you've got some fight in ya." Tom said with an air of doubt in his voice. "Alls I'm sayin' is that right there ain't no normal fish." His large finger pointed in the direction that the bounty poster had disappeared in. But something told him not to spoil the boys adventure. Sometimes one had to find out about things on their own to really understand life. It took him quite a few years of soul searching to figure out that his legacy carried such a weight in who he was. This kid would have his own like lessons in life. [break][break] "Just promise me that when the time comes and you see that fish you take a moment to size up your enemy." His features took an especially heavy expression as his thick voice spoke the words clearly to emphasize his point. "Ain't no shame in walking away from a fight...so long as you come back and land that fish." He winked his pierced brow and the young angler before cracking a smile and sinking his teeth once again into his ham. [break][break] "How old are ya anyways Coyote?" He spoke through a mouth that was very much still full. He couldn't size the boy to be much older than ten. Tom had been a teen when he first set off on his own. But by then his muscles were already hardened from years of hard labor. This pup didn't seem like he had even seen a hair on his chin. [break][break][break] RINGLEY BARNUM
