Latent skills are those skills & talents available to your character through their own physical traits. While attributes aren’t an end all be all to everything your character can do, it is a tell of what your character is good at. To keep skills and abilities fair across the board and to not undermine the importance of attributes, latent abilities will typically stem from your attributes - this is to remind all individuals your characters cannot do EVERYTHING and will be weak in SOME areas.

Ex. It would make more sense for a speed attributed character(primary, secondary, or tertiary), to have a speed based ability as opposed to a spirit attributed character. The speed attributed character is NATURALLY faster than the spirit based character, their physical strength towards speed allow the character the capability to learn a skill reaching a higher speed.

The example above isn’t to emphasize the spirit based character is sluggish or slow by any means, but just to emphasize the speed attributed character has the physical capability of reaching those speeds naturally(without a devil fruit or augmenting abilities).

Originally, special abilities were described as those involving devil fruit powers, but with the introduction of Rokushiki and soon to be Fishman Karate to the site, we have to expand that.

Moving forward, special abilities will be those skills and powers stemming from other than ordinary means to include: devil fruits, cybernetics, rokushiki, and any other martial arts or skills that would grant other than ordinary “powers.” As more of a “superpower” type of category that can do anything within the bounds of reason to a SET THEME, special abilities do not have to line up with any of your attributes. Though they can EMULATE(act in place of) latent abilities, special abilities(excluding those created from devil fruits), DO NOT, WILL NOT, AND CANNOT exceed the bounds of latent abilities lined with an attribute.

Ex. Character A has SPEED as a primary, secondary, or tertiary attribute.
Character B does not have speed as any attribute.
Character A has a high speed movement for a latent skill.
Character B has a high speed movement as a non-devil fruit special skill.
Character A’s movement is faster than character B’s.

Devil fruit abilities are excluded from the latent vs special abilities due to the various powers devil fruits may induce. The Goro Goro & Pika Pika no mi for instance are both logia class fruit revolving around elements that would allow the user to perform movements at incredibly high speed. In instances such as those, the special ability would logically outclass the naturally quick movement.

Currently, characters are limited to ONE THEME of special abilities excluding devil fruit. This won’t be a forever thing and will eventually be expanded, but for now will remain at one theme to keep things relatively tame.

THEME: Themes generally revolve around a martial art (like rokushiki or fishman karate), but any style/line will pass as a theme as long as they have somewhat of a logical connection. If it makes sense within the realm of your theme we’ll allow it - we will not, however, allow a bunch of random abilities that you want to pass off as a theme because you want a variety of powers. Cybernetics are considered a theme, this is to keep the concept of cybernetics from being spammed by individuals who just want one or two parts to justify a special ability.

TO GET A SPECIAL ABILITY EXCLUDING DEVIL FRUIT: You may start with 1 theme & 1 skill under that set theme, nothing more. The overall theme will have to be explained to set the tone for subsequent abilities. If you did not start with the special ability theme, the style must initially be learned/founded IC. After learning the concept of the theme/first ability, subsequent abilities can either be purchased in the shop or learned IC.

Expect more updates and changes as the beta goes on to keep things open. If, by the end of the beta, we have to go into maintenance mode to make changes, we'd like to have the site closed for less than a week if we can help it, so please bear with us as we try to work things out.
