"Eli-boy... it ain'tcha time yet."
Sunset across the waves brought a burning horizon to bear upon the small, nameless isle. Sitting on a rock in the sand was a familiar fishwoman, hair a bright, unnatural magenta just as memorable as the wicked teeth and bedraggled drawl.
"Thought'cha were dead, a'first." She kicked a scuffle of sand off her webbed toes. "Lil bird o'er the water said ya two came 'ere. I wanned to sell that fruit, boy, but when I seen them men all melty-like, well, I thought t'myself... maybe next time, Joan."
Quite the carnage she had come across indeed. Rumors of devil fruit came with dreams of berri, and the amount this one would have sold for would have secured a modest living for a lifetime.
And for as long as she could remember, she hardly pegged the young Eli as a vicious savage. But the injuries to that marine squad were more than mere metal. She had seen Liara first, crumpled in the sand off the beach. Dead as soon as Joan stepped near enough to cover her in shadow. And she thought the same of the blond titular Eli as well, until a closer look. But all that was in the past. Joan had cleaned up the shore and disposed of the bodies. All there was, was quiet lapping waves.
Having grown bored of kicking at dirt, she aimed the next kick at the young man's body instead. "You's an investment now, y'hear me, Eli-boy? You ate my ticket to th'good life."

Everything was black until a figure walked forth from the darkness and simply stood there and watched. Upon careful inspection the figure belonged to the only motherly figure he knew, Llara. As this was happening in his mind, the young Eli could not speak out to her even though he wanted to so bad. Though she didn't speak either, her presence calmed him and made sure to return him to the present world especially after what just occurred. It was almost as if she was telling him from the grave that everything will be okay, and to live his life out for her.
"You's an investment now, y'hear me, Eli-boy? You ate my ticket to th'good life."
A sisterly kick was given to wake the boy and that it did. It brought him back from the moment he was having in his head, and the made sure he was aware of the current situation. The teenager raised his body to sit up, groaning in the process. His eyes locked on the waves that hit at the shore, wondering where all the carnage had went. However, he wasn't going to ask where they were. He didn't want to know really. He didn't want to see the lives he had extinguished along with the lifeless body of his only mother as well.
In his mind he thanked Joan for all she did while he was blanked and unconscious. But in reality he couldn't speak much, all he could do was watch the waves come and go while he regained his composure. The young teen was reviewing his thoughts and his stance on a few things before he opened his mouth.
Marines never seemed that big of a problem to him. Sure he heard the stories and rumors, but none of those things hit home until he experienced something that forever impacted his life. It was ironic, that the one thing they killed his mother for was the reason he gained the powers that ended their lives in return.
Eli wasn't a brutal person, but this event changed him forever. His views of the world morphed and some things became static instead of ever growing. Maybe one day his opinion might shift, but so soon after such a brutality his mind was focused on other things.
However, he thanked the vision he had before waking. It ensured him not to completely indulge himself in the path of vengeance. Even if his views of marines were perverted, he wouldn't spend his days on this earth yearning for the lives of every marine that lived. Instead, he vowed to continue this adventure, to become the best archaeologist he could and living a long a fulfilled life.
"Thank you, Joan."
She knew what she was being thanked for, and that was for doing what she could to make sure he didn't see the bodies when he regained consciousness, and for that he appreciated her.

She parted her lips to reveal a full set of monstrous teeth, but it was more a tic rather than a smile. Maybe even a grimace. The nameless isle was pretty enough now, what with the blood washed away and the secrets buried in earth.
Ah, but he so serious. While her instinctive defense was incredulity topped off with comedic relief, losing a parent warranted more: tough love or no.
Joan grunted in acknowledgement to the thanks and watched the waves as well. A minute passed by.
"Found a nice place. Up one of 'em cliffs, overlooking thuh sea. I buried 'er o'er there." Maybe a tiny bit presumptuous, but one could say the fishwoman had a bit of a motherly side that also bordered on overbearing. But she didn't want him to see the body again. "Got a good rock for 'er too, but I ain't put nothing on it yet. Figured ya'd want ta... do that part."
Would things have been different if Joan Shark had been just a tiny bit faster? Probably. Even if it wasn't truly her fault, she felt like she'd come away from this with her own lingering guilt. During the times they had met up, she had grown fond of the boy and his mother.
"...Take yas time."

"You know I don't blame you right?" He said with a quiet voice.
It was true. They knew what they were getting into looking for treasures that were highly sought after. The idea of death was foreign to him, but now that it was here he had to adjust quickly. Joan did him the favor of burying his mother while he was still unconscious. All Eli had to do was say his good byes, and maybe engrave something on her tombstone. It's not like it was going to last forever anyway. By the time a few months passed the tombstone would more than likely be gone, and the exact place where she had been buried forever lost. But none of that mattered as he carried within himself the memory of her and what she gave him, and that was the power he now possessed.
He stood up slowly, stumbling a bit before getting his feet settled beneath him. One deep breath and he was off towards the cliff where she was buried. "I won't be long." He said as he walked past Joan and continued towards the cliff. The salty air made him feel at home, and brought back the memories of all the adventures they had. Though she wasn't his real mother, she may as well have been. With everything Llara did for him and taught him there was no one in the world that could take her place. He was thankful for her in his life, and extremely saddened by the fact that their journey was cut so short.
On the way towards the burial site he thought of things to write on the tombstone. Nothing came to his mind. His thoughts were scrambled, and he was trying his best to keep from being taken over by his emotions. He knelt besides the tombstone, one hand resting on the top of the makeshift burial. Eli began to mumble things that were inaudible to anyone but him and his mother, in spirit anyway. He said his goodbyes, and promised to carry on her will as well as his own.
He took out a knife he kept with him at all times and began engraving a tree on the tombstone. The tree symbolized the place where she took him to learn all that he knew about being an archeologist to this day, and where he decided that it would be his passion and path in life. The island of Ohara.
Upon finishing, he stood up said his prayers and made his way back to Joan. Tears were visible on his face, but he did not try to hide them anyway. "What now?" He asked like the clueless teenager he was, hoping she could give him an answer. The boy was lost for the moment, and needed some guidance before he did something he regretted.

A heavy frown. For some, the opinions of others dictated their life. For Joan, there was no need for the reassurances of others. Regardless of what Eli believed, her failures were her own and her burdens for all of time. "Aye, aye..." she said, if only to make him drop the subject.
A hand instinctively shot out to catch the boy as he stood up, but was ultimately unneeded as he got his bearings. Still not entirely convinced of his stability, the fishwoman would point towards the direction of said notable cliff, watching Eli head over with guarded eyes. He took both more and less time than she'd have liked or envisioned; ultimately, it was just right. She spent that wandering time looking out at the horizon with her good eye, uncharacteristically pensive and without words.
Eventually the boy would return and neither of them made comment on the tears. With a groan the fishwoman stood up, stretching her limbs with a groan. "Well, Eli-boy, yous a free man now. It's up'ta you what ta do." She put her hands on her hips. "Y'can go 'ome and live a peaceful life. Y'can continue yous journey to find pretty writing rocks if y'like. But ah recommend some protection, yah? The seas a dangerous place, clearly... archeo-whatsomats need friends and a crew."
She gestured with a thumb behind her, past the dunes. "Me cap'n n' boys would welcome ya, but we alls fishfolk only. We can give ya ah ride to wherever yous wants to go, though. I could also help ya man yer mam's ship off th' island, they'd wait fer me."

Protection, huh? Eli never was the type to lead a crew himself, the boy was independent but never cared enough to rile people up to do things. Instead he liked to be a cog in the machine, an important piece to the everlasting puzzle that is life. Though for now he was alone, or at least would be alone once Joan left him wherever he chose to go. He hadn't an inkling of an idea of where to start his journey, hell his journey had already long begun—this was simply another chapter in his adventure.
"Well Joan, I'd like to think learning to use these powers would be of utmost importance. It's going to be a while until I find a crew, if I ever do. I'm not the type to rape and pillage, what I'd enjoy the most is the freedom living on the run." He said, inhaling that salty air that he loved so much.
"It's a shame I'm not a fishman, would have been fun to tag along with you for a bit longer, you know? It's going to be quite boring on my own, but I'll manage. This world is full of possibilities." Despite the current circumstances, he faced the world with an optimistic perspective, one that hopefully wouldn't be weathered down to nothing as he got older.
He looked at Joan once more. "What are you going to do after we split ways? You have any plans yourself? I feel like I haven't asked you much about your own future as of late, and I apologize for that." As a young boy he was often excited, and hardly ever remembered to think of others when he had his eyes set on something. It wasn't something he was particularly proud of, but being able to dedicate your time to something one hundred percent was a great trait—even if he had to dial it back a notch at times.

"Ah—powers. Thas' right, yous a Lightning Human now, aint'cha?" For the first time Joan would look a little bit unnerved, having seen the melty mess the boy had left of the Marines... as well as not being a fan of electricity in general.
"Well, there be good pirates out there too. With a logia like that yous be a target. Try not ta stick out till ya can handle th' heat!"
She had no doubt that Eli's adventure would not pause here. He had survived through luck and would prosper through will. "Is a shame t'me too," the fishwoman sighed. "We's be making a statement about our crew, y'know? Give th' humans reason to remember why we's fishman superior at sea. But yous can come wif us, maybe th' captain take a liking to ya." It was a vain hope, but Joan felt ill prepared to part ways with the blond just yet. Like throwing a little bird out of the nest, hoping it would fly.
The next made Joan chuckle, and given her larger stature pat the boy's head with one hand, ruffling his hair. "Don't chous worry about it! Ahm looking fer someone, but it's nothing ya can help me with righ' now. Maybes in a few years, short stuff."
She nodded then, as if envisioning their meeting in that future. But for now the present needed handled. "Once yous got all your bearings, we be leavin', Eli-boy."
