When Kipper had received his assignment to a marine vessel he had been overflowing with excitement. It was one thing to be a Chore Boy in the Marineford Headquarters but being on an active duty vessel was a whole other matter. What intrigued Kip the most was the chance to really prove his worth. Being in active duty meant actual combat, confrontations and god willing some adventure. Sure he was just a Chore Boy but he surely had more of a chance on really testing his skills while out at sea, especially given his assignment. [break][break] The Cherry Boy Hunter they called her. Of course Kip had kept track of the comings and goings of various Marines through their career. A habit he had picked up from his Gramps when he was younger. 'You never know who the leaders of tomorrow are sonny.' He had always said. But that had been the spark to fuel Kippers own drive into the Marines. [break][break] I'm one of those leaders. He thought to himself as he walked across the parade grounds of the Marineford and making his way for his newly assigned ship. Conviction, his large black Yo-Yo, bobbed absentmindedly in his left hand. It was an old habit but the feel of the disc moving in tandem with his hand was as natural as breathing to him at this point. But breathing was where his focus lay. All of his belongings he had brought with him when he enlisted was in a blue duffel bag strapped to his shoulder. The same way it had been when he packed up his home life and shipped off. Now here he was only a few months later doing the same thing. There was a part of him the honestly wondered if that was what the rest of his life was going to be like. It certainly wasn't unheard of in his chosen profession but still, how long did it take to lose the ache of longing for what you leave behind? [break][break] He had almost walked past the ramp leading up to his assigned ship. Kip came to a full stop, snapping Conviction back into the palm of his hand as he did. For a long moment he stood drinking in the vessel that was to be his new post. With a sigh and a smile he made his way up the ramp with an air of excitement, his small feet quickly moving to bring him to the deck of the ship. Kip had only just gotten both his feet on the deck of the ship when he heard footsteps approaching. An alarm in his head went off before he had a chance to see the approaching person. Marines were to salute superior officers upon sight and as a Chore Boy everyone was his superior. Snapping his feet together and tightening his grip on his Yo-yo he snapped his right hand to his brow and spoke loudly from deep in his chest. [break][break] "Chore Boy Pronto reporting for duty sir!"

The latest incursion off the waters of Jaya had lead to the loss of a few of her crew. It was to be expected, of course; Marines died, pirates died, everyone died eventually. Still, upon being promoted to Captain her responsibilities had never felt heavier. Suzie couldn't help but be troubled by immense regret, tossing and turning at night over what she could have done better. Bureaucracy had taken her time away; she needed to spar with her first mate Percival like she used to, to avoid rusting away.
Normally, lower-ranking recruits were effective nobodies. Every member on her ship was a name and face she took great pains to remember, but with her latest one his familial reputation preceded him. Young, the youngest member she'd have insofar—and the son and grandson of a few notable Marines.
Standing aboard the deck of her ship, which was a standard Marine vessel of seastone undercoating and great white sails save for the swan figurehead, Suzie Q was... excited.
Light steps up the gangplank interrupted wispy thoughts and brought the woman back to the present. Twirling on one foot, her much heavier, clicking boots made way for white attire with her jacket draped over her shoulders and just barely swaying over the floorboards.
Seeing the boy nearly made her pause. Shock of white hair, bright blue eyes. 'He's so cute,' she thought.
"At ease!" she spoke to him, with a surprisingly forceful voice of her own as she completed her superior's return of the salute. "Chore Boy Pronto—welcome aboard the Swan Dive. I am your Captain, Suzie Q. This is your first active duty assignment, is it not? Let's take a walk."
And without ado she'd start the tour.

Kipper hadn't been expecting to meet his commanding officer right from jump. His first thoughts were of her elegance. She had an air about her that seemed to recall that of royalty. The way she walked the deck at least demanded such attention. Though this was all gathered through his peripheral gaze. His eyes trained forward off the side of the vessel. It wasn't until she returned his salute and relieved him that he was able to look at her. [break][break] Spreading his legs to shoulder length he clasped both hands on his Yo-Yo behind his back as he stood at attention. She properly introduced herself but a ranking officer of her decorative record needed no such introductions. Still, it showed a lot to Kipper that he was hear herself. Him being a Chore Boy alone he didn't have the merit to warrant such a greeting. It was all he could do to keep the boyish grin of excitement from crossing his face. The name she identified with the ship matched it beautifully. The swan figurehead was enough to distinguish it from the rest of the fleet. [break][break] "Aye Captain. Enlisted a month ago right here in Marinesford ma'am...sir...Captain." He stuttered for a moment at the end of his sentence. Suddenly incredibly aware of how unprepared he was to address superior officers of the opposite gender. His face turned a bright shade of red as he fell in pace behind his superior officer, the hand palming the Yo-Yo nervously at his side. He found a lot of the mental preparation he had done prior to his first arrival was out the window. At the very least he hadn't expected actually meeting his CO until they at least first left port. Such things were usually traditional, but already Kip could see that such tropes wouldn't be the case in his new crew. That was good, maybe here a Chore Boy could prove his worth after all.

"Sir or ma'am will do fine," she said, not particularly bothered by the slip up nor having been the first time she'd been faced with such a situation. The Captain would lead the way across the deck, past the center mast and towards the bow. "It's no easy thing to be assigned straight to the Grand Line. I have, of course, heard about your family. While these things are taken into consideration, know that they will not take away from your duties."
Suzie turned to look at him as she walked, the flyaways of hair her bouncing with her steps underneath her cap. Nepotism was something that she would not allow. "As a Chore Boy you will cook, clean, and manage the daily maintenance of the Swan Dive. You will learn and live all the intricacies of sailing till you know them by heart. Never think that your role is not necessary to build confidence and humility as a Marine."
She stopped by the forecastle. "The shifts you work and your exact duties will be explained in more detail by the Warrant Officer. Here is where you will sleep. Higher ranking Marines reside in the aftcastle. When you can, make sure to fill out the quality-of-life survey given to you." She smiled and dropped to casual speech. "I enjoy character in my crew, Kipper, and I never forget a birthday. We also have music night every Tuesday. I don't suppose you play an instrument?"

Thankfully she was an understanding Captain, the young boy's slip up was met with a polite correction that could have come from a teacher offering a correction to her student. Kipper couldn't help but look all over the ship. He didn't focus on details, he would soon be scrubbing every nook and cranny of the ship, but the vessel as a whole. It wasn't the first military vessel he had been on board of and it certainly wasn't as heavily modified as some of the Marine Captains insisted on. The swan was a lovely touch though, it's soft white finish contrasted beautifully against the ship. [break][break] She was right. The Grand Line was no place to be taken lightly. Every moment was surrounded by danger, the worst pirates from all across to world came to the Grand Line to test their might, so they had to be stronger. A visible grin formed on Kippers face as she mentioned his family, and the lack of influence on his duties it would have. [break][break] "I wouldn't have it any other way Ma'am." The young boy spoke only after respectfully waiting for his superior to finish her point. "I wanted to challenge myself for just that reason. I want to be a Marine. Not just some legacy cruising through the ranks on their father's merit. No greatness ever came from slacking off ma'am so you'll find none of it from me." His voice rang with certainty as he spoke. Of course he didn't like doing chores. Mopping, cooking and scrubbing every moment of his day wouldn't be easy. But there were no shortcuts on the path to Admiral. [break][break] As she explained to him where his daily orders would come from and where the sleeping quarters were Kipper fell back to stance tucking his hands behind his back and under his pack. Her smile caught him off guard when paired with her casually addressing him. So much off guard that before he could catch his Kip's lips floated from a pursed seal to a slightly goofy grin. He quickly pursed his lips back together as blood rushed to his face at the embarrassing reaction. [break][break] "Flute ma'am. Mother insisted when I was growing up. But I'm afraid I don't have one of my own." A look of slight disappointment washed across his face at this realization. Still, this new life seemed to exceed what expectations he had.

She did enjoy his choice of words. No greatness ever came from slacking off. Success, yes, it boggled the mind sometimes to realize how complacent those in power could be. Such people could have money, reach, influence—but never greatness. Never the stuff of heroes.
"I'll be pleased to see such in action," she mused, knowing the difference between words and deeds but still having a good feeling about her latest recruit nontheless. And at the mention of playing the flute she beamed. "Excellent. Not to worry! I keep a fine collection of instruments aboard at all times. You'll fit right in."
Eccentricities aside, there was something heartwarming when the whole crew came together to create something special.
With a nod Suzie would continue on, beckoning the young boy to follow. They would trail past the railings, the captain pointing out distinct features of the ship or passing notable members of crew. "We're more of a support squad than frontline combatants," she explained. "In fact, one of our main duties is the transportation of prisoners. Below deck are holding areas. Therefore, it's important you know how to interact with them. Chore Boy Pronto, have you ever met a murderer face-to-face?"

Kipper nodded his head, tossing his white messy hair a bit as he did so. He would be excited to test his own mettle in some real action as well when the time presented itself. Already he felt more included than he had ever expected he would have been as a Chore Boy. It didn't seem as though the Captain had any intention of keeping him out. Kip had figured as a Chore Boy he'd be in the background, swabbing up the mess after the real adventurers. Perhaps to some degree he would, but it seemed like he was going to get that chance to prove himself after all. [break][break] It excited him that she already had a slew of instruments at their disposal. Not only did it mean that he could take part in the activities but he could possibly learn more instruments if he wanted. Surely there was bound to be many musicians on board. The excitement was sure to show on his young round face. For a moment he forgot that he was speaking with his Commanding Officer. His youthful imagination carting him away from the interaction. [break][break] The tour continued, she pointed out a few of the key features of the vessel and some of the key personnel. It had been years since the last time he had been on a vessel. A few times his father had used his own ship to cart them between his various posts he had but it had slowed down right before Kip's enlisting. Their duties suited him fine. It was honorable and dangerous, he could only imagine the kinds of twisted souls he would meet on duty. The Marines didn't just cart around your run of the mill low lives. He was sure to see at least one or two pirates of some renown at some point. Her question caught him off guard though. He had to think, it truly depended on ones definition of a murderer. [break][break] "No Captain. I've met many men who have taken many lives. Though none that killed anyone in cold blood...that I know of I suppose..." People were complex creature. He hadn't thought of it before but there was a full possibility that someone he had known had lived a double life. He shrugged off the thought, knowing full well that wasn't the Captains intentions with the question.

"We all take lives in the line of duty," Suzie agreed easily enough. "But you'll meet those who premeditate their actions. Who thrive on attacking the innocent. Or those who just don't care at all."
Suzie looked down at the latest edition to a crew. He was still a boy, regardless of what his talents and ambitions may be. His tells were obvious, the cracks in his discipline repetitive. She had not been much better only a few years ago.
"You're going to meet criminals that range from silent and chilling to suave and manipulative. It's crucial that you don't let your guard slip or fear take hold, and especially not to pay their words any heed. No one has ever escaped from this ship, and I won't start by having one of my crew feel sympathy for the devil.
"As you spend more time on the ship, I'll have the Chief Petty Officer provide you some lessons for that sort of thing."
By now they were walking into the deckhouse, passing through kitchen rooms and dining halls, the white-painted walls immaculate despite the weathering of the sea. The duo would pass by the captain's quarters next, the front outlined in glaring pink. At last, they stood on the poop deck overlooking the Swan Dive in its entirety.
"The last thing on our agenda is a ritual I make every crew member go through." She put a steadying hand on the boy's shoulder, smiling as if to reassure him that it was nothing of great note. "You must trust me, your captain, explicitly. So then—do you trust me?"

A bit of regret washed through Kip's mind as Suzie Q looked over him with what he felt was a powerful gaze. He had somewhat stated the obvious, something that would be far to obvious to the Captain as she no doubt had taken lives in her years of service. Kip was still fresh, he had the luxury of not yet having to get his hands dirty. No doubt the longer he served the more familiar he would get with the concept of bloodshed but experience started somewhere. The front of her concern seemed to be the perception of the criminals. [break][break] "I will remain vigilante against such trickery Captain." Kip spoke with calculated words this time, choosing which he spoke to his Commanding Officer wisely. He didn't want to leave the impression that his inexperience would put their duties at risk. "I'll uphold the Swan Dive's reputation as if it were my own. But the lessons would be very helpful. I'm eager to learn ma'am. I know I'm still young, even for my position, but I don't plan on letting that hinder me in any way." The determination in his voice picked up as he spoke. He didn't want to leave doubt in his ability to do the Swan Dive proud and without a reputation of his own to back him up his resolve and conviction had to do. He could tell how strongly Suzie Q felt about the ship they stood on. As they reached the poop deck Kip craned his neck to make sure he could see as much of the ship as possible. [break][break] When the Captain spoke of a ritual Kip felt a knot tie in his stomach. He had spent his whole life around Marines, retired or otherwise. The amount of stories he had heard about the early career of military folk and the hazing and pranks that they had undergone to fit in with the crew they were assigned too. The knot vanished at Suzie's last words when her hand grasped onto his shoulder. Kip brought his eyes up to meet hers, his cold blue gaze focused in a moment of determination. A smile forced it's way onto his face despite his nerves and he spoke. [break][break] "I trust you entirely Captain. I'll follow you to hell and back!" What surprised Kip was the overwhelming feeling of meaning it. He had only just met the Captain but already she had his respect as a leader and his loyalty as a soldier.

I trust you entirely Captain. I'll follow you to hell and back! Hers was a smile that swallowed his vision. "Good."
From her slender fingers would stonerot shoot out across his shoulder. Suddenly her hand was not comforting but instead heavy-handed grip. As her eyes bore into him he'd feel the surge of his heart quicken and pound painfully. He wasn't safe. How many people were? Even fourteen year old boys knew what they felt. Especially them. "Do you feel that?" she asked him as his right arm turned petrified and immovable, the effects of her fruit spreading throughout his chest and lungs, ossified organs. "There's little fear like when you can't breathe. Like drowning... like facing me."His lungs would close up as her effects spread to his heart, down his torso and streaking up his neck. "Remember that feeling. And the kind of desperation that comes with it." That was her lesson in criminals and the Swan Dive. The last beat of his heart was loud enough for both of them to hear. She'd lean her head close to marvel at the absence of that sound, long hair brushing past the statue he'd become. Standing straight and having accomplished her point, Suzie Q would beckon to one of her crew. "Ana! Get him below deck. He'll snap out of it around dusk. Put him to work then."// exit

She was simply leaning against the mast of the ship, her black jailer's hat tipped low to cover over her eyes. However, she knew the procedure. It was the perfect "in" for any new addition to the Swan Dive. Ana herself had experienced it for herself, loving every fleeting moment of the loss of feeling within her body. She licked her lips slightly just thinking about it again. "Ana! Get him below deck. He'll snap out of it around dusk. Put him to work then." She said nothing to confirm she'd received her orders. However, her body moved forward to carry out the bidding of her captain. Her heels would resonate as she slowly approached the frozen boy. While he was stagnant and petrified he'd easily be able to hear and see everything around him. She made sure to hide her hungry smile behind an expressionless face as she neared the boy. "Precious... A little marine.", she said in a low-monotoned voice. Suzie would be walking away to turn her attention to other pressing matters on the ship. This would leave Ana with some delicate intimate alone time with the boy. She'd flash a small smirk as she slowly circled the boy, sliding her hands gently across his frozen shoulders, and chest. "Mhmmm", she'd exude a savory purr under her breath, just audible enough to be heard by the young man. She'd press closer to him as she lowered herself to meet him at eye level. She would lean in slowly with the very end of her lips grazing the side of his face as she whispered in his ear. "We're going to have a lot of fun together Chore boy..."Part of being a marine was the mental fortitude one had to have in order to press through all situations and opposition. What she was doing, what Q did was all an effort to break this into the young man fast and early. She'd give him a lingering long before standing behind him. Her hands, masked by her body would take liberties poking and prodding, jabbing and grabbing every in of the boys backside. Sufficiently pleased she'd cross her arms across his chest before whispering. "Shave." Within an instant she had the young man within the bottom deck of the ship. She'd carry his stiff body into a cot, dropping him roughly on top of the bed. From there she'd pull up her a chair, and take her usual jailer's pose. Crossed legs, with a magazine she'd read too many times to count..

When Kipper gave his answer there was a shift in the air. Suddenly their innocent meet and greet turned into a rite of passage. Her comforting touch turned heavy against his skin as a strange sensation began to slowly seep from the spot that she held. Panic set in as Kip realized what has happening to him. His arm was gone before he had the chance to put together what was going on. Suzie's cool words chilled his blood as the petrification crept across his chest. One by one he could feel his organs becoming slowed then hardening as they went. When it washed over his lungs and heart with each breath and beat they began to slow. Panic pulsated through his eyes as he took his last breath and the gong of his hears final beat sounded the end of the fleshy mortal.
[break][break]
He knew well the desperation she was speaking of. It was that of a doomed man looking for any way to survive. In that moment every ounce of refinement Kipper had put into himself over the years preparing for this very service. Now that he was petrified it was almost as if the world around him had ceased to exist, a purgatory of sorts. He was barely aware of his stone body being passed to the care of another. He was in hell, completely left to the will of others and helpless at that.
[break][break]---
[break][break]
It was the swaying of the ship he felt first as his inner ears began to revert back to their fleshy state. The process felt ten times longer than becoming stone had felt. He felt like a turkey that had been pulled from the icebox and left to thaw slowly over time. The first beat of his heart was the most beautiful sound he had heard in his short amount of time in existence, followed of course by the sweet symphony of breath as his lungs filled. The oxygen was quickly rejected in a wet cough as Kipper sat up in a start gasping for another breath as he did so. He did so again and again, clinging to each breath as though he hadn't known he would ever breath again. Tears filled his eyes and blurred his vision, not from fear but strain to make up for the lack of breathing.
[break][break]
When his wits came about him he realized he had no idea what amount of time had past since that last, loud heartbeat. His eyes adjusted to the room as he sat on the hard cot he had apparently been placed on. Quickly he counted his fingers and toes, sure that one may have snapped out in he hardened state. Once he was sure of his completeness he swung his feet over the side of the cot, they didn't quite reach the floor. A woman became apparent in the room as well, a worn magazine in her hand. For a long moment Kipper stayed quiet. His mind going over the last few remembered moments, the panic and desperation that took complete control over him.
[break][break]
"That's what the prisoners feel..." Kip's words came out quiet, his mind still processing as he spoke out to the woman that was no doubt some form of his superior. "That's why the Captain wanted me to feel that. So I'd know how desperate these prisoners would be..."

She'd read her magazine so many times that she could mentally go through each section verbatim without so much as a peek into the thing. However she'd thumb through page after page generally keeping her mind focused on something. A trait she'd learned early on in her career path as aa Marine jailer. However, she gave a low hum as her eyes lifted off of the page she was on. She gazed over at the young man as he'd slowly recover feeling within himself. She was slightly impressed, she thought he'd still be out of sorts for another hour or two. However, if he was this young and already a fledge-in member of the Swan Dive, it meant he obviously had some potential to be special. She'd hide her smirk behind the presence of the magazine as she listened intently to the boys words to himself... "That's what the prisoners feel..." It wasn't a completely inaccurate statement. She'd remain silent as she turned yet another page in her worn catalogue. "That's why the Captain wanted me to feel that. So I'd know how desperate these prisoners would be..." There did come a level of sensitization to being a member of the Swan Dive. They were a support unit, dealing primarily in the moving of dangerous individuals. However, Suzie did prefer they all have some level of respect for humanity and invoking upon crew members the fate of the residents of the vessel, the could all learn to be a bit more humane. However. it was a lesson that completely sailed over Ana's head. She knew the purpose behind it, but preferred to do things on her own terms. She set down the magazine, placing it by her side. "Oh you're awake... Good.", she said silently with her monotone voice again. She did her best to quell her rising excitement by clearing her throat subtly. "You're going to need these back." She said reaching underneath her seat to retrieve the young man's undergarments. While he was out of it, Ana used the intimate time to better acquaint herself with her new crew mate. This meant searching every inch of the boys body. Looking for anything that captivated her interest. From her assessment of young Kipper, he looked be strong, with the potential to grow even stronger. This ship was the right place for the young Marine, and Ana would relish every lingering moment she got to see him develop into something worth really caring about. "I am Ana and I am the jailer of this ship. As a Chore boy, you'll obviously answer to your superiors on this ship. This is Suzie's ship... But this is my jail. When choring for me, feel free to relax yourself. Don't concern yourself with rank. I'm much more lax about marine honorifics."She spoke with a small coo in her voice. She flashed Kipper a sudden smile, the smile one would have when receiving a new toy or pet for the first time. "Shall we get to work then?"
